Dr Celia Lourenco

Chromatography and mass spectrometry, with a focus on volatile organic compounds (VOCs), for clinical and environmental applications

Profile

Dr Celia Lourenco specialises in the use of advanced chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques (GC-MS, GCxGC-MS, SIFT-MS) across biomedical, food and beverage, environmental and industrial contexts. She has over 10 years of experience in mass spectrometry-based techniques.

She works within Southampton’s Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Facility and is a member of the S3 (Spectroscopy, Spectrometry and Structure) research group.

Celia’s research employs trace gas detection and analysis to investigate targeted chemical compounds or chemical signatures in the gas phase. Her work focuses on the study of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using advanced chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques, with applications in non-invasive early disease detection and environmental monitoring.

Before joining the University of Southampton in 2025, Celia gained extensive experience in mass spectrometry and chromatography at Hovione FarmaCiencia SA (API chemical industry, Lisbon), Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon), Cranfield University and more recently, Brunel University London.

Celia has applied her expertise across a wide range of projects in areas including disease diagnosis, material characterisation, fundamental chemistry, environmental contaminants and air quality monitoring, working with academic and commercial partners, including NHS Trusts, the Pitt Rivers Museum, CONCAWE (Conservation of Clean Air and Water in Europe), and the Mary Lyon Centre (MRC Harwell).
