Dr Julie Herniman

Chromatography, mass spectrometry, supercritical fluid chromatography-mass spectrometry and high-resolution mass spectrometry

Profile

Dr Julie Herniman is a Principal Enterprise Fellow within the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of Southampton. She manages the School’s chromatography and mass spectrometry facility, one of the leading centres of its kind in the UK. With over 25 years of experience in chromatography and mass spectrometry, Julie provides analytical solutions for researchers across the university and collaborates with others in academia and industry.

Her research focuses on the coupling of mass spectrometry (MS) to different chromatographic techniques including gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). Her work primarily explores the application of SFC-MS to address problems in areas such as petrochemistry and renewable fuels, agrochemicals and formulated products, polymeric excipients and identification of biomarkers for the early detection of pressure ulcers.

After gaining a BSc from Plymouth University, Julie worked as a research technician at the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Cardiff University, where she also obtained an MSc. She has worked at the University of Southampton since 1998 and was awarded a PhD in 2022.
