Dr Robert Bannister

Advanced crystallographic techniques, electron diffraction, inorganic synthesis, national facility coordination, and chemical analysis of air-sensitive compounds

Profile

Dr Robert Bannister is the coordinator for the National Crystallography Service (NCS) and specialises in crystallography and inorganic chemistry. His expertise spans single crystal X-ray diffraction, crystalline sponges, and the synthesis of complex inorganic compounds, particularly lanthanide and high oxidation state early transition metal complexes.

Robert has played a pivotal role in the expansion of the UK’s crystallographic capabilities, helping to establish the National Electron Diffraction Facility. In his role as NCS Coordinator he offers guidance on sample preparation, data collection, and structural analysis. He is also developing anaerobic techniques for electron diffraction, enabling the study of air- and moisture-sensitive materials.

With a strong background in synthetic chemistry and spectroscopy, Robert has contributed to numerous collaborative projects, including partnerships with Rigaku, Merck, and Warwick University. His work is of particular relevance to academic institutions and industrial partners seeking advanced structural analysis, especially in the context of materials that challenge conventional crystallisation and diffraction methods.
