Professor Geraint (Taff) Morgan
Analytical chemistry, specialising in novel assays for the quantification of volatile organic compounds in complex samples
Profile
Professor Geraint (Taff) Morgan specialises in the development and optimisation of novel assays for the quantification of volatile organic compounds in complex samples, using advanced mass spectrometry instrumentation to design innovative solutions for commercial partners.
An entrepreneur with his own highly successful commercial ventures, Taff also has extensive experience of industry–academia collaboration. He has applied his expertise to numerous projects for a range of companies, from SMEs to international corporations. Air quality monitoring for UK submarines, a cutting-edge analytical system for a global fragrance company, and the analysis of distilled spirits (in particular Scotch whisky) for distillers worldwide are just a few examples.
His wealth of industry experience is reflected in his role within Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Southampton, which alongside his own research focuses on the department’s Research and Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise activities. This includes being the preferred analytical partner of a large international automobile company and a strategic partnership with leading US instrument company, LECO.
Before joining the University of Southampton, Taff had a 31-year tenure at The Open University, where he was a member of the teams that developed the Ptolemy and GAP instruments for the Rosetta and Beagle2 space missions.
