Chemistry training and development opportunities

Electrochemistry summer school

Our flagship electrochemistry summer school is the gold standard for anyone seeking to expand their knowledge and technical skills in this field.

The five-day programme, Instrumental Methods in Electrochemistry, is taught by experts at the leading edge of electrochemistry research, and the curriculum is refreshed each year to reflect the latest techniques. The programme includes:

  • Lectures on fundamental electrochemistry theory and electrochemical techniques
  • Hands-on experiments using a range of industry-standard instrumentation
  • Opportunities for informal networking and discussion with members of the University of Southampton Energy and Electrochemistry group, as well as other industry participants and PhD and postdoctoral researchers.

We are one of just a handful of institutions globally offering in-depth electrochemistry training at this level, and our long-running programme is considered the original and best in the sector.

Virtual control room

Our custom-built immersive virtual control room recreates the dynamic working environment of a control room operator. With sophisticated simulation models in a realistic setting, it provides a space to evaluate and develop your team’s skills and gain in-depth understanding of chemical process facility operations.

  • Choose from 16 training simulations, ranging from beginner level to complex scenarios
  • Simulations include virtual operation of a gas separator, condenser, binary column, crude column, batch and CSTR reactor, oil pipeline and more
  • Alarms, custom desks, plant sound effects, and radio and phone communications mimic the workings and pressures of the control room environment
  • Enables training and competency assessment of procedures and emergency scenarios, with video recording and action logs to monitor trainee performance
  • Our expert staff will work with you to design a bespoke package and provide on-the-day support
